Our concept for Hairspray emphasized the visual contrast between the Black and white characters. We chose to dress our Black characters in vibrant, colorful costumes to reflect their joy, resilience, and strong sense of community despite living under segregation. In contrast, most of the white characters wear more muted pastel colors. However, Tracy and Penny are intentionally dressed in brighter patterns to symbolize their support for integration and their growing alliance with the Black community. Since Tracy is the most progressive white character in the show, we chose to slightly modernize her costumes to help her stand apart visually, reinforcing her forward-thinking perspective about segregation and body positivity.
