Concept
The costume design for Aye No! draws inspiration from the vibrant culture of a Texas border town and the diversity of Latina identity. The Grandpa and Aunties were designed with recognizable, distinct personalities so the audience could immediately identify them as members of the same family while still seeing their individual character. The Fairy Godmothers, portrayed by drag queens, were inspired by different expressions of Latina womanhood. We have the pageant queen, the Texas girl, and the tough punk woman. Through color, silhouette, and personality, the costumes celebrate the humor, individuality, and cultural richness of a Latina family.
